List of EVPN and DC-related RFCs

List of EVPN and DC-related RFCs

In this post I try to collect links to all interesting RFCs and drafts related to DC, EVPN and network overlays.

Some of this documents are complete industry standards, some are drafts aiming to become such standarts, and others are just informational documents, often already outdated and forgotten, but despite this still interesting and useful. So don’t forget to pay attention to time frame each particular document was created and updated.

RFC 7209 – Requirements for Ethernet VPN (EVPN)

This document specifies the requirements for an Ethernet VPN (EVPN) solution, which addresses various VPLS issues.

RFC 7432 – BGP MPLS-Based Ethernet VPN

This document describes procedures for BGP MPLS-based Ethernet VPNs (EVPN-MPLS).

RFC 7938 – Use of BGP for Routing in Large-Scale Data Centers

This document summarizes operational experience in designing and operating large-scale data centers using BGP as the only routing protocol.

RFC 7348 – Virtual eXtensible Local Area Network (VXLAN)

This document describes Virtual eXtensible Local Area Network (VXLAN), which is used to address the need for overlay networks within virtualized data centers accommodating multiple tenants.

RFC 7364 – Problem Statement: Overlays for Network Virtualization

This document describes issues associated with providing multi-tenancy in large data center networks and how these issues may be addressed using an overlay-based network virtualization approach.

RFC 7365 – Framework for Data Center (DC) Network Virtualization

This document provides a framework for Data Center (DC) Network Virtualization over Layer 3 (NVO3) and defines a reference model along with logical components required to design a solution.

draft-ietf-bess-evpn-overlay – A Network Virtualization Overlay Solution using EVPN

This document specifies how Ethernet VPN (EVPN) can be used as a Network Virtualization Overlay (NVO) solution and explores the various tunnel encapsulation options over IP and their impact on the EVPN control-plane and procedures.

draft-ietf-bess-evpn-inter-subnet-forwarding – Integrated Routing and Bridging in EVPN

This document describes an Integrated Routing and Bridging (IRB) solution based on EVPN to address requirements of inter-subnet forwarding among hosts/VMs across different IP subnets.

draft-ietf-bess-evpn-prefix-advertisement – IP Prefix Advertisement in EVPN

This document defines a new EVPN route type for the advertisement of IP Prefixes and explains some use-case examples where this new route-type is used.

draft-ietf-bess-dci-evpn-overlay – Interconnect Solution for EVPN Overlay networks

This document describes how Network Virtualization Overlays (NVO) can be connected to a Wide Area Network (WAN) in order to extend the layer-2 connectivity required for some tenants.

RFC 7623 – Provider Backbone Bridging Combined with Ethernet VPN (PBB-EVPN)

This document discusses how Ethernet Provider Backbone Bridging (PBB) can be combined with Ethernet VPN (EVPN).

RFC 6820 – Address Resolution Problems in Large Data Center Networks

This document examines address resolution issues related to the scaling of data centers with a very large number of hosts.

draft-raggarwa-data-center-mobility – Data Center Mobility based on E-VPN, BGP/MPLS IP VPN, IP Routing and NHRP

This document describes a set of network-based solutions for seamless Virtual Machine mobility in the data center.

draft-lapukhov-bgp-sdn – Centralized Routing Control in BGP Networks Using Link-State Abstraction

This document proposes a method for inter-AS traffic engineering for use with the networks consisting of multiple BGP Autonomous-Systems (ASNs) under the same administrative control, such as eBGP DC fabrics.
